People worldwide like clothes made in India because they are made with great care and skill. India is famous for making clothes from materials like cotton, silk, and denim, which are loved worldwide.

  • Record-breaking Exports: Despite challenges with logistics, India achieved its highest-ever exports of textiles and apparel, including handicrafts, reaching US$ 35.58 billion in the fiscal year 2022-23.

  • Export Trends: In July 2023, textile exports were worth US$ 1.66 billion, slightly lower than July 2022. Apparel exports also declined from US$ 1.38 billion in July 2022 to US$ 1.14 billion in July 2023.

  • Ready-made Garments (RMG): RMG exports in FY23 reached US$ 16.19 billion, showing a 1.1% growth compared to the previous year.



Product Category Analysis

  • Declines and Growth: Cotton textiles saw a decline of -28.45%, while man-made textiles declined by -11.86%. Ready-made garments (RMG) experienced a modest growth of 1.10%, while handicrafts declined by -19.13%.

  • Cotton Fabrics and Madeups: Exports of cotton fabrics and madeups totaled US$ 2.75 billion during April-August 2023.


Government's Targets

  • Vision: The Narendra Modi government aims to achieve US$ 250 billion in textiles production and US$ 100 billion in exports by 2030.

  • Negotiating FTAs: India is in the process of negotiating FTAs with various countries and regions, including the EU, Australia, UK, Canada, Israel, among others. These agreements could provide India a competitive advantage in the global market.

  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Policy: India's FDI policy allows 100% FDI in single-brand product retail trading and up to 51% FDI in multi-brand retail trading, attracting international retailers to source garments and home textiles from India.
